Crews Wrangle Brush Fire

by Bay City News

Fire and U.S. Coast Guard crews wrangled a brush fire on a sparsely inhabited island in Suisun Bay Wednesday afternoon, a fire captain said.

Around 3:10 p.m., the Coast Guard reported that a fire had been spotted on Winter Island, located north of Pittsburg in Suisun Bay, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Capt. Robert Marshall. Two columns of smoke and flames were reportedly seen on the island, he said. The captain said there appears to be just one house on the island but no other major structures, and that the house does not appear to be threatened by the blaze.

He said the fire district would let the fire burn out unless it threatened nearby buildings. That process could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, Marshall said. The fire is under active investigation.
