Concord Girl Fighting Brain Cancer

A fundraising effort has been launched to help the family of 7-year-old Kristina Massa pay medical bills after discovery of a brain tumor and medulloblastoma.

Kristina Massa, a 7-year-old Wren Avenue Elementary School student, was diagnosed with cancer last week following the discovery of a brain tumor. While Massa recovers from surgery at Oakland's Children's Hospital, friends and family are donating online to help her parents deal with mounting medical bills.

Massa was rushed to hospital last Monday, according to her cousin, Amanda Lowell, who set up the fundraising page on GoFundMe.com. An MRI revealed a brain tumor, which was removed during a nine-hour surgery, and Massa was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. This form of brain cancer typically effects children more than adults, according to Cancer.net.

The seven-year-old Concord resident will have to undergo 10 months of chemotherapy, says Lowell. Massa will likely be hospitalized for the next month or more, and her parents unable to work as they stay by her bedside.

Massa's GoFundMe page has raised $2,600 in the past week, and Lowell is hoping to spread the word and garner more support from the community, she says, as the Massa family "help Kristina to kick cancer's butt!"
