Historical Society To Move Masonic Hall Onto Galindo House Property

The 1927 building on Galindo Street will be relocated 400 yards to Clayton Road near the Galindo House.

One of Concord's oldest buildings is being uprooted and moved to a new location.

Masonic Hall was built in 1927 at 1765 Galindo Street, and now sits alone in an area surrounded by busy roads. The Concord Historical Society bought the property in 2010 from the former Concord Redevelopment Agency and sought to concentrate nearby historical properties to create a museum, historical resourse center and meeting facility.

The Planning Commission approved a relocation plan in its last meeting. The Masonic Temple will be moved by May 25 to 1928 Clayton Road, near the Galindo House. The area is a 2-acre site that includes properties located around Marina Court, Amador Avenue, and Clayton Road.

The move will require placing the 225-ton building on steel beams and jacks to transport it using dollies and a tractor trailer, reports the Contra Costa Times. It will then be placed on a new foundation and restored over the next couple of years.

According to the Concord Historical Society, Concord’s Masonic Temple or "Masonic Hall" provided the ceremonial meeting room and social hall for Mt. Diablo Lodge #448, Free and Accepted Masons. The building was constructed by L.V. Perry for $31,550, and dedicated on October 6, 1928. Masonic Hall comprises 20 rooms in approximately 9,600 sq. ft. on two levels, and is currently being used as a temporary space for Gallery Concord.
