Mike was a member of our Monday night support group at the Cancer Support Community in Walnut Creek.Read More The group just heard about his passing last night and we were all very shocked by the news. Mike has been struggling with his health over the past few months and also with his living arrangements. I know that he was down about his situation but always showed up at our group meetings on Monday nights. Mike was a very caring man who did what he needed to continue to deal with what the disease had done to him and even though he struggled, he was always there for other folks in the group. We are saddened by his departure but are heartened by the fact that he was able to do some things that he wanted to before he left like visit his sister and go on a vacation which he needed badly. We will miss him on Monday nights at the CSC. God bless you Mike.

Wynton Marsalis and his brother Branford most likely. Herbie Hancock is well into his 70s himself.Read More Ahmad Jamal is in his 80s. I wouldn't be surprised if parts of the mantle even passed to Diana Krall and even her husband, Elvis Costello, whose musical stylings are all over the place these days. Norah Jones may also be in the running, too.

Dave Brubeck lived a long life (unlike a number of jazz geniuses). He was probably the greatestRead More living jazz artist. So who takes over that mantle now? I'm thinking Herbie Hancock or Sonny Rollins, but who am I forgetting?

It is indeed a sad day for West Coast Jazz as one of its greats has passed on. We will alwaysRead More remember him for what he brought us and that his music shall live on, especially when one takes BART into the Financial District in San Francisco and a few street musicians with Saxophones play their renditions of "Take Five".

We as a city should honor this great musician with a memorial concert perhaps showcasing our city'sRead More middle/high school jazz bands participating?

Dave Brubeck was not just a jazz giant but also a gentle man and family man, married 70 years to hisRead More college sweetheart. He was the pre-emminent member of the Honorary Board of the Concord Historical Society. Dave loved to talk about his growing up in Concord .While spending his early years in Concord, Dave split his time between taking music lessons from his mother, the town classical piano teacher, and working on his dad's cattle ranch which is now Oakhurst Country Club and the Pavilion. It is lucky for all of us that he decided to make music his life's work. The Society Resource Center has a collection of Brubeck family history and photos, and his archives are housed at the Brubeck Institute at UOP, Stockton. The Resource Center is open on Wednesdays from 1-4 at 1600 Sutter Strret, Ste E,Concord.

Dave Brubeck is our history. As a young couple we loved his music and as he grew older so did weRead More still loving his compositions. We thought he would live forever and so he will as we play and listen to his recordings. He and Paul Desmond must be having a great reunion--we salute them both!
