LIVE BLOG: De La Salle-Mater Dei, Division I State Championship

The Spartans take on Mater Dei from Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento.

(27-5) and Mater Dei-Santa Ana (31-3) are two of the most storied athletic programs in the nation. Tonight they renew their rivalry on the state's biggest state, the Division I state championship at Power Balance Arena in Sacramento. 

The Spartans enter the game on the heels of a somewhat, but not totally, surprising win against Castro Valley, while the SoCal champion Monarchs defeated Centenial-Corona and Long Beach Poly on their way to the championship game.

8:01 p.m. Just finished warm-ups and we are getting set for the anthem.

8:02 p.m. Starting line-ups announced.

8:10 p.m. Tip-off

First Quarter

7:13: Spartan's Udenyi drops a triple from the top of the key for the games first basket. De La Salle 3, Mater Dei 0.

6:00: Katin Reinhardt flies in for a smooth floater. De La Salle 3, Mater Dei 2.

4:50: Reinhardt with a hand in his face calmly sinks the threeDe La Salle 3 , Mater Dei 5.

4:26: Mater Dei's Eli Stalzer gets fouled on a drive and sinks a pair of free throws. De La Salle 3, Mater Dei 7.

After scoring the games first basket, the Spartans' watch as Mater Dei goes on a 7-0 run.

3:30: A huge block followed by the Monarchs' Stanley Johnson, leads to a missed Xavier Johnson fastbreak lay-up. The Spartans gather the rebound and score on the other end (Dan Peera). De La Salle 5, Mater Dei 7.

Timeout: Blood clean-up on the floor and a Mater Dei's Stanley Johnson received treatment for a nose bleed.

3:30: A huge block followed by the Monarchs' Stanley Johnson, leads to a missed Xavier Johnson fastbreak lay-up. The Spartans gather the rebound and score on the other end (Dan Peera). De La Salle 5, Mater Dei 7.

1:38: De La Salle's defense has tighened and stopped Mater Dei on four consectuive possessions. Duke Da Re gets to the line on a tough drive and sinks 1 of 2. De La Salle 6, Mater Dei 7.

.31: Kelvin Morgan with a emphatic swat of a Stalzer lay-up attempt. Spartans again turnover the Monarchs. De La Salle 6, Mater Dei 7.

.00: The Spartans' Duke Da Rei hits a contested three at the buzzer to give DLS the first quarter lead. De La Salle 9, Mater Dei 7.

The first quarter was definitely played at a DLS pace. Allocco has to be ecstatic.

Second Quarter

7:45: Benny Battle scores the lay-up on a smooth pass from Travis Pacos. De La Salle 11, Mater Dei 7.

7:02: Travis Pacos for three! De La Salle 14, Mater Dei 7.

11-0 run for De La Salle.

6:00: Udenyi with the beautiful come from behind steal and Kelvin Morgan with the tip-in on the other end. De La Salle 16, Mater Dei 7.

5:42: Mater Dei's Stanley Johnson puts in a tough basket and gets the foul. Free throw good. De La Salle 16, Mater Dei 10.

3:52: Udenyi rims out a three and Reinhardt also misses two attempts from the corner. De La Salle 16, Mater Dei 10.

Reinhardt is getting open looks but he has cooled down significantly since his hot-start. The De La Salle defense is in perfect form. This is an ugly game... exactly how the Spartans want to play.

2:21: The Spartans are content to run through their entire offense and milk clock. Reinhardt to the line after a loose ball foul on Pacos. He sinks both (MD in bonus). De La Salle 16, Mater Dei 12.

0.00: The Spartans hold for the last short with over 20 seconds to go in the first half and cannot convert but take a six-point lead into halftime. De La Salle 18, Mater Dei 12.

Halftime Analysis: The De La Salle defense just held the third ranked team in the nation to 12 first half points. Everyone knows the Spartans defense is upper echelon... but wow! The Monarchs lowest scoring game of the year was 56 points to Orange Lutheran and they are currently on pace for 24 points in the state finals. 

Reinhardt leads all scorers with seven first-half points. Morgan and Da Re both lead DLS with four points each. Stanley Johnson pulled down five boards to pace Mater Dei.

Look for both teams to pick up the tempo in the second half.

Third Quarter

6:40: The Spartans' captain Duke Da Re rains in another contester three. De La Salle 21, Mater Dei 12.

De La Salle has an amazing ability to remain composed in big games.

5:42: Mater Dei's Xavier Johnson stroke a smooth lefty three (his first points of the contest). De La Salle 21, Mater Dei 15.

4:52: Reinhardt sinks two from the line. The Spartans follow-up with a three from the corner by Udenyi. De La Salle 24, Mater Dei 17.

4:30: Reinhardt and-1. He is in the groove again. De La Salle 24, Mater Dei 20.

3:38: De La Salle is really in slow-down mode. They are waiting till inside of five-seconds on the shot clock to put up and attempt. Timeout. De La Salle 24, Mater Dei 20.

3:15: Heavy collision between Udenyi and Stalzer. Jump ball for DLS. De La Salle 24, Mater Dei 20.

2:08: Beautiful running left-hander by Pacos is quickly answered by a Reinhardt jumper. De La Salle 26, Mater Dei 22.

1:55: Reinhardt draws another foul on an off-balance jumper. Knocks down both free throws. De La Salle 26, Mater Dei 24.

1:04: Pacos misses a three and Benny Battle comes up with the offensive rebound. De La Salle 26, Mater Dei 24.

.30: Two calls go against DLS. First Udenyi drives and appears to be fouled but no call. Udenyi than stands in to take a charge and is called for a block on the Reinhardt drive. Reinhardt splits the free throws. De La Salle 26, Mater Dei 25.

.04: A mock cheer rises from the Spartans' faithful after Da Re draws a foul after a tough drive to the basket. He sinks both free throws.

.00: The Monarchs' David Brown races coast-to-coast to float in a soft right handed lay-up as the third quarter buzzer sounds. De La Salle 28, Mater Dei 27.

Fourth Quarter

Mater Dei is heating up.

7:30: The teams trade baskets. Mater Dei Scores on a beautiful back-door pass to Xavier Johnson. DLS 30, Mater Dei 29. 

5:47: Eli Stalzer with the basket. De La Salle 30, Mater Dei 31.

5:39: Johnson to the line and sinks two. DLS 30, Mater Dei 33. 

3:37: Stanley Johnson scores inside. De La Salle 30, Mater Dei 35.

3:23: Benny Battle splits a pair of free throws. De La Salle 31, Mater Dei 35.

3:03: Stanley Johnson whistled for the charge. De La Salle 31, Mater Dei 35.

2:35: De Ra misses an open, corner three. De La Salle 31, Mater Dei 35.

2:17: Xavier Johnson rebounds his own miss and is fouled on the follow. Misses both free throws. DLS 31, Mater Dei 35.

1:31: Udenyi misses a heavily contested three with the clock running down. The Spartans are still running through their entire offense. De La Salle 31, Mater Dei 35.

The Spartans needs a defensively stop with 1:29 to go. 

Reinhardt leads all scorers with 17.

1:14: Reinhardt dribbled through the entire defense and scores the lay-up. De La Salle 31, Mater Dei 37.

.41: De Ra with the steal and Benny Battle to the line for 1-and-1. Battles hits the first and knocks in the second. DLS 33, Mater Dei 37.

.37: Udenyi comes away with the steal but Mater Dei ties him up before he can get the timeout. David Brown splits a pair of free throws. DLS 33, Mater Dei 38.

.32: Battle splits free throws. DLS 34, Mater Dei 38.

.30: Morgan fouls out and sends Stanley Johnson to the line. Johnson misses the first and hits the second. DLS 34, Mater Dei 39.

.24: Battle beats Reinhardt with a lightening quick drive to his left and finishes with his right. DLS 36, Mater Dei 39.

The Spartans desperately need a steal.

.24: No time comes off the clock as Peera fouls before the inbounds pass sending Xavier Johnson to the line. Calmly sinks the first... and the second. DLS 36, Mater Dei 41.

.07: Stalzer scores a fastbreak lay-up after several DLS missed three point attempts. DLS 36, Mater Dei 43.

Final: Mater Dei 43, De La Salle 36.

Final breakdown: The Spartans simply could not muster enough offensive to stick with Mater Dei. The contested shots that were falling in the first half, were finding all rim in the fourth period. The Spartans' Duke Da Re comes away with the Sportsmanship award. Battle leads all De La Salle scorers with 10. Stanley Johnson with six points and 15 rebounds. Reinhardt leads all scorers with 17.

Attendance figures: Friday, 3,638. Saturday Morning, 4,048, Saturday night 3,828. Total: 11,514.
