High School Basketball Playoff Recap

Concord boys and Amador Valley girls pull off upsets while Dougherty Valley girls and Newark boys cruise to victories and Northgate girls win with stunning fourth-quarter comebacks.

Here are some of the scores from the North Coast Section high school basketball playoff action on Tuesday night.

BOYS

Division I

San Leandro 55  Granada 51

San Leandro High hung on for a first-round victory against Granada High, 55-51.

The seventh seeded Pirates led 24-16 at half and maintained that margin through the third quarter.

However, San Leandro needed to hold off a fourth quarter comeback by the Matadors to preserve the victory.

San Leandro was led by senior Andre Russell, who scored nine points, snared 13 rebounds and blocked four shots. The Pirates are now 21-6. They next travel to Antioch to face second seeded Deer Valley High on Friday night.

Granada finishes its season at 16-10.

Monte Vista 69  James Logan 57

Monte Vista High put away James Logan High, 69-57, to advance to the second round.

The Mustangs are now 20-7. They will play next at fourth seeded Castro Valley High on Friday night. The Trojans had a bye in the first round.

James Logan finishes the season at 13-14.

Liberty 59  Amador Valley 48

Liberty High needed a strong fourth quarter to put away a stubborn Amador Valley High team, 59-48.

Liberty, the division's sixth seed, led 24-18 at half. However, the 11th seeded Dons closed the gap to 37-34 at the end of three quarters before Liberty finally put the game away in the final period.

Liberty is now 21-6. They next play at number three seeded Freedom High on Friday evening.

Amador Valley was led by senior Nick Ruotolo, who scored 16 points. They finish their season at 15-12.

Note: De La Salle High had a bye in the first round. The top seeded Spartans (24-2) will play at home Friday night against ninth seeded Heritage High (17-10).

Division II

Newark Memorial 48  Dougherty Valley 31

Top seeded Newark Memorial High put away Dougherty Valley High, 48-31, to advance to the second round.

The Cougars are now 23-4. They will play next at home against Mt. Eden High at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Dougherty Valley, the 16th seed, finishes the season at 15-12.

Mt. Eden 62  Clayton Valley 59

Mt. Eden High held off a strong final period rally by Clayton Valley High and escaped with a 62-59 victory.

Mt. Eden, the division's ninth seed, led 31-22 at halftime and 49-37 at the end of three periods. However, the eighth seeded Eagles outscored them, 22-13, in the fourth quarter, falling three points short.

Clayton Valley finishes the season at 17-10.

Mt. Eden improves to 20-7. They will face top seed Newark Memorial on Saturday afternoon.

Las Lomas 62  Redwood 38

Las Lomas High dusted Redwood High, 62-38, to easily advance to the second round.

The fourth seeded Knights led 29-17 at half and 49-23 at the end of the third quarter.

Las Lomas is now 18-9. They next play at home Friday night against fifth seeded Dublin High.

Redwood, the 13th seed, finishes the season at 17-12.

Dublin 85  Rancho Cotate 64

Dublin High easily defeated Rancho Cotate High, 85-64, to advance to the second round.

The fifth seeded Gaels are now 17-10. They travel to Las Lomas High to play the fourth seeded Knights on Friday night.

Rancho Cotate finishes the year at 15-14.

Maria Carrillo 45  Northgate 42

Maria Carrillo High edged Northgate High, 45-42, to move forward.

Maria Carrillo, the seventh seed, will play next at second seeded Windsor High on Friday night. They are now 21-7.

Northgate, the 10th seed, finishes its season at 16-11.

Concord 42  Montgomery 37

Concord High upset Montgomery High, 42-37, to advance to the second round.

The 11th seeded Minutemen are now 18-9. They will play next at third seeded College Park High on Friday night.

Montgomery, the sixth seed, finishes the season at 18-10.

GIRLS

Division I

Monte Vista 61  Santa Rosa 40

Monte Vista High played a strong second half to defeat Santa Rosa High, 61-40.

The sixth seeded Mustangs led 29-20 at halftime and then pulled away in the second half.

Monte Vista was led by junior Angela Rigo, who scored 21 points. The Mustangs are now 22-5. They play next on Friday night at third seeded Mission San Jose High.

Santa Rosa, the 11th seed, finishes at 18-10.

Amador Valley 46  James Logan 37

Amador Valley High upset James Logan High, 46-37, to advance to the second round.

Amador Valley, the 10th seed, is now 16-10. They play next at second seeded Deer Valley High on Friday evening.

James Logan, the seventh seed, finishes at 19-9.

Castro Valley 75  Pittsburg 54

Castro Valley High scored early and often as they defeated Pittsburgh High, 75-54.

The fourth seeded Trojans led 42-21 at half and coasted to victory. They were led by senior guard Michelle Miyamoto, who scored 16 points and had seven assists.

Castro Valley is now 20-7. They next play at home against fifth seeded Heritage High on Friday night.

Pittsburg High, the 13th seed, finishes at 14-13.

Heritage 61  Livermore 51

Heritage High came from behind to defeat Livermore High, 61-51, to advance to the second round.

Livermore, the 12th seed, led 32-28 at halftime. However, Heritage, the fifth seed, outscored Livermore 21-5 in the third quarter on their way to victory.

Heritage is now 23-4. They next play at fourth seeded Castro Valley on Friday night.

Livermore finishes the season at 13-14.

Foothill 43  Granada 28

Foothill High played strong defense to defeat Granada High, 43-28.

The eighth seeded Falcons led 16-12 at halftime and steadily pulled away in the second half.

Foothill is now 15-12. They play next at number one seeded Berkeley High on Friday night.

Granada, the ninth seed, finishes the season at 16-11.

Division II

Northgate 54  Hayward 53

Northgate High pulled off a stunning fourth quarter comeback to edge Hayward High, 54-53.

Hayward, the ninth seed, led 32-23 at half and 42-32 entering the final period. However, the eighth seeded Broncos outscored them 22-11 in the fourth quarter to snatch the victory.

Northgate senior guard Greer Kleber had a monster game, scoring 22 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.

The Broncos are now 15-10. They will play Friday night against top seeded Carondelet High at the De La Salle High gym. The Cougars had a first round bye.

Hayward finishes the season at 17-9.

Dublin 60  Redwood 54

Dublin High held off a fourth quarter comeback to defeat Redwood High, 60-54.

The sixth seeded Gaels led 31-21 at halftime and 45-32 at the end of three quarters before Redwood made its run.

Dublin is now 18-8. They will play at third seeded Casa Grande High on Friday night.

Redwood, the 11th seed, finishes the season at 17-11.

Casa Grande 49  Arroyo 26

Casa Grande High easily disposed of Arroyo High, 49-26.

Casa Grande, the third seed, is now 28-1. They will play at home Friday night against sixth seeded Dublin High.

Arroyo High, the 14th seed, finishes at 13-13.

Dougherty Valley 75  Newark Memorial 11

Dougherty Valley High crushed Newark Memorial High, 75-11, to advance to the second round.

The second seeded Wildcats are now 19-8. They play Friday night at home against seventh seeded Montgomery High.

Newark Memorial, the 15th seed, finishes at 12-15.

Montgomery 62  Clayton Valley 51

Montgomery High rolled to a 62-51 victory over Clayton Valley High to advance.

Montgomery, the seventh seed, is now 22-7. They play Friday night against second seeded Dougherty Valley High.

Clayton Valley, the 10th seed, finishes the season at 16-11.
