Girls Basketball: Clayton Valley Begins Quest for NCS Championship Tonight

Clayton Valley starts the North Coast Section playoffs against rival Northgate tonight.

Clayton Valley's girls basketball team starts its postseason against a familar foe — Northgate.

The two Diablo Valley Athletic League teams will meet in the quarterfinals at Clayton Valley High tonight at 7 p.m. The Eagles, seeded second in the 14-team tournament, received a bye through the first round, while No. 7-seeded Northgate beat Alameda 57-56 in its opening playoff game Tuesday.

It will be the third meeting between the rivals this year. The Eagles beat Northgate in the previous two matchups, on Jan. 18 and on Feb. 11.

Clayton Valley (24-2) comes into the playoffs on a 19-game winning streak, not losing since Dec. 14. It finished the league season undefeated, beating every team by at least 12 points. Before this year, Nortgate (18-9) hadn't lost a game in league since 2008.

Sophomore guard Ashley Allen leads Clayton Valley in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. Backcourt partner Karley Menez is also averaging double figures, with 11.9 points per game. Kayla Galanter is Northgate's top point-getter, averaging 16 points a contest.
