De La Salle Football: Spartans Pull Away For 34-14 Victory In 2013 Season Opener

De La Salle wears down a tough Clayton Valley High School squad in a high energy game

De La Salle High School held off a tough Clayton Valley Charter High squad, 34-14, in a much anticipated football season opener on Friday night.

The Spartans, state champions last year, were playing their first game under new head coach Justin Alumbaugh.

The game against Clayton Valley, last year's North Coast Section Division II champion, was played before an excited, packed house at Spartan stadium.

The Spartans have not lost to a Northern California team since 1991.

De La Salle got on the board first, scoring a touchdown in their first series of down.

The Spartans missed a field goal on their next series and Clayton Valley marched down the field on an 80-yard drive to tie the score, 7-7, with 5:02 left in the opening quarter.

However, De La Salle ran back the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to take back the lead, 14-7.

The Spartans scored in the second quarter on a 26-yard pass after a Clayton Valley fumble to lengthen their lead to 21-7.

However, the Eagles fought back, much to the delight of their cheering fans. They scored a touchdown with 42 seconds left in the half to cut the score to 21-14.

On the first drive of the second half, De La Salle fumbled. However, Clayton Valley only moved the ball to about midfield before giving it up on downs.

The Spartans scored several plays later on a 17-yard run to make the score 28-14.

Clayton Valley had a drive going late in the third quarter, but it ended on an interception.

De La Salle scored a final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard pass. The extra point was blocked.
