Carondelet Scorches Monte Vista, 72-43

The Cougars likely secure another league championship with their win over Monte Vista.

Carondelet High's girls basketball team remains unbeaten in league play as they crushed Monte Vista High, 72-43, on Tuesday night.

The Cougars set a frantic pace from the tip-off, scoring 25 points in the first quarter while holding the Mustangs to just seven. A stifling person-to-person defense by Carondelet led to numerous steals and turnovers.

After a disappointing first quarter, Monte Vista rallied back, outscoring Carondelet 20-14 on a hot shooting streak by junior Sara Jensen and sophomore Lily Wissinger.

The frenetic pace hurt the Cougars as fatigue set in and players were slow on defense and boxing out. At one point, the Mustangs managed to cut the lead to single digits before a short surge led by Cougars senior forward Hannah Huffman ended the half at 39-27.

Huffman led all scorers, with 14 of her game-high 20 points coming in the first half.

Carondelet overwhelmed Monte Vista in the second half, outscoring the Mustangs 33-16. The Cougars utilized their size advantage by running a high-low post against the Mustang's zone defense.

Crisp passes around the perimeter led to easy buckets in the paint or open field goals when Monte Vista's defense collapsed.

Senior guard Melissa Russi finished with 15 points, shooting 3-3 from the three-point line. Sophomore guard Natalie Romeo contributed 14 points on five field goals. Mustang junior forward Jasmine Dilworth kept Monte Vista in the game in the third scoring six of the team's eight points.

The two teams previously met in Concord on Jan. 6, where the Cougars won 80-30.

This win most likely secures Corondelet as the Easy Bay Athetic League champions.

Monte Vista (17-4, 7-2) will play at Amador Valley High on Friday while Carondelet will play at San Ramon Valley High on Friday.
