The Turning Point: Logan’s three-run second was enough to make the difference, and it also chased Eagles’ starter Chaz Meadows from the game after just two innings.

The Quote: “It was a good ball game. That’s two good teams playing. We walked one too many guys and that’s the way it goes,” said Clayton coach Bob Ralston.

Who's Next? The Eagles play Oakdale in the losers’ bracket of the Crown Classic Thursday at 1 p.m.

The Bottom Line: Yau’s array of pitches leaves Clayton stumped; the team mustered only three hits in seven innings.

Clayton Valley High starting pitcher Chaz Meadows had his 39 1/3 inning scoreless streak snapped as James Logan chased the Eagles' ace Tuesday. It happened after just two innings, in a 4-2 defeat in the first round of the Crown Classic Tournament at Valley Christian High School in San Jose.

“It was a good ball game,” said Clayton coach Bob Ralston. “That’s two good teams playing. We walked one too many guys and that’s the way it goes.”

Ralston will have to assess what went wrong after the Eagles managed to score just two runs on three hits against Logan starter Brandon Yau, who went the distance and pitched a complete game.

Despite Yau's good performance, Clayton took a quick lead in the first inning.

Jordan Burger reached base on a fielder’s choice and ended up stealing second. Jeff Doran hit a high chopper to Logan shortstop Pascual Flores, who threw Doran out at first, but Burger was able to score from second, to put the Eagles out in front 1-0 early.

That turned out to be Clayton’s only lead of the game, as the Colts scored four runs – three in the second and one in the fifth – to take the lead.

Clayton showed some life in the seventh. After the Eagles were down to their last out, Meadows worked a full-count walk and Burger was hit by a pitch.

Logan coach John Goulding then had a short discussion with Yau at the mound, and decided to leave him in the game. Yau didn’t disappoint — he got Doran to hit a come-backer to him, which he tossed to first to end the game.

“He’s about a hitter away from coming out,” Goulding said. “But he made a good pitch there, and obviously got out of the inning.

“He has good, not great stuff,” Goulding said. “He throws three pitches for strikes and in high school that’s very effective.”

Yau’s performance was more than effective Thursday. He pitched a complete game and helped the Colts advance to the semifinals.

“We really talk about playing one pitch at a time, and he does it better than anybody,” Goulding said. “... he doesn’t let anything bother him. He falls behind and he doesn’t let it affect him.”

Yau gave up just two runs on three hits over seven innings, and received more than enough run support. That support gave Goulding the confidence that Yau ultimately wouldn’t need to be pulled.

“It’s an easier feeling knowing you have a good pitcher on the mound and knowing he doesn’t give up a lot of runners,” Goulding said. “A two-run lead late in the game is good.”
