Baseball: Clayton Valley Advances to NCS Quarterfinals

The Eagles advanced out of the first round with a 2-1 victory over Montgomery.

One down, three to go.

Clayton Valley scored the go-ahead run in the third inning and held on to beat visiting Montgomery 2-1 in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs Tuesday.

The Eagles (20-3-2) took an early lead in the first inning but Montgomery tied the score in the top of the third. But it wasn't tied long, with Clayton Valley scoring in the bottom half of the inning to go up 2-1.

Domenic Mazza pitched six innings for Clayton Valley, giving up just one run and one hit while striking out six to record the win. Jeff Doran pitched the final frame for the Eagles to get the save.

Leading the offense was Chaz Meadows, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The second-seeded Eagles will face the winner of the Rancho Cotate-Dougherty Valley first-round game on Wednesday.

No matter who wins, Clayton Valley will host the quarterfinal game Friday at 5 p.m.
