Teachers Union Pushes for Furlough Days in May

The "temporary agreement" would result in a five-day Memorial Day weekend, as well as a day off earlier in the month.

The Mount Diablo Education Association—the district's teachers union—announced Monday that after polling its membership, the majority favored taking three furlough days in May, rather than at the end of the school year in June.

"After much back and forth negotiating with the MDUSD bargaining team, we have agreed that the no  pay/furlough days will be taken on May 6, May 27 and May 31," Jo Carson, MDEA vice president, told the union.

This is a temporary measure to help with the district's budget crisis. Union members will vote on it Tuesday and Wednesday.

If the furlough days are approved, students and staff will have a five-day Memorial Day weekend and a three-day Mother's Day weekend.
