Mt. Diablo Unified Getting State Funds To Upgrade Schools

The district will receive Prop. 39 funds to help make schools more energy efficient

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District will receive $1.78 million in state funds to retrofit some of its schools.

The district's share is part of $450 million in Prop. 39 revenue that is being divided up among all of California's schools.

Prop. 39, approved by voters last November, closed a corporate tax loophole and generates about $1 billion a year in extra revenue for the state. Half of the money must be spent on schools, colleges and other public buildings.

There has been considerable political debate over how to divvy up the revenue. As late as last month, some political leaders were still discussing the issue.

The formula as it now stands allocates money to school districts based on their average daily attendance and their participation in the Free and Reduced Meal Program.

School districts need to submit their project plans to the California Energy Commission before they receive any of the Prop. 39 funds.
