MDUSD Fires Superintendent Steven Lawrence

The school board voted Thursday to terminate contracts for Lawrence and General Counsel Greg Rolen.

The superintendent of the Mount Diablo Unified School District has been fired.

Contracts for Steven Lawrence and General Counsel Greg Rolen were terminated without cause as decided in a special meeting Thursday evening

Both contracts ran until June 2014 but will now end on or before May 1, 2013.

In March, the district voted 3-2 to extend Lawrence's contract by a year, but then decided earlier this month to spend up to $20,000 on outside lawyers to advise them regarding Lawrence and Rolen, the Contra Costa Times reports.

The final vote Thursday was 3-2, with trustees Linda Mayo and Lynne Dennler dissenting. Dennler was the only board member to vote against letting Rolen go.

The next board meeting is this Sunday, April 28 at 8 p.m. when the separation agreements will be signed and an interim superintendent will be selected. The board will also start work on a proposal for a superintendent search.
