First Board Meeting on Clayton Valley Charter Proposal Tonight

The MDUSD board will hold its first public hearing on the Clayton Valley Charter proposal tonight at Monte Gardens Elementary School.

For the first time, Clayton Valley Charter proponents will present their case to the Mount Diablo Unified School District board on why the high school should convert to a charter school.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m. and will go until 7. at Monte Gardens Elementary School. The charter petitioners will have 15 minutes to go over the proposal and public comment will last an hour.

The board will not take any action tonight; members will just listen. It is expected the board will vote on the charter proposal at its Sept. 13 meeting.

Proponents are hoping to make Clayton Valley the first conversion high school (when a public school becomes a charter) in the Bay Area. In June, approved the charter and if a majority of the MDUSD board also approves, the school is expected to become a charter school for the 2012-13 school year.

If the board rejects the proposal, the decision is expected to be appealed to the Contra Costa Office of Education and, if rejected again, to the state Board of Education.

When looking at previous charter proposals from the other boards, the charter might be more likely to pass .
