One Bay Area Grants $2.2 Million For Detroit Avenue Safety Improvements

Detroit Avenue is soon to become a much safer street for pedestrians and cyclists, thanks to funding of $2.2 million from One Bay Area Grants for safety improvements.

The Detroit Avenue Complete Streets Project was chosen from a list of 22 competitive projects submitted in Contra Costa County and will receive $2.154 million in federal funds to install bike lanes and make sidewalk improvements on Detroit Avenue, between Clayton Road and Monument Boulevard.

New traffic signals will also be installed on Laguna Street and at Sunshine Drive/Lynn Avenue, where temporary stop signs are currently in place.

The City of Concord will provide local match funds of $415,000 from Measure J to fully qualify for federal funding of the Detroit Avenue Complete Streets Project.

The project was a result of collaboration between Contra Costa Health Services, Monument Community Partnership, First 5 Contra Costa, Central County Regional Working Group, County Connection and the City of Concord, as well as Concord Mayor Dan Helix, Councilmember Edi Birsan, Contra Costa Supervisor Karen Mitchoff. Community members also participated in the yearlong process to assess walking and biking safety on Detroit Avenue.

A celebratory event for the Monument community is planned for Saturday, July 13 at Meadow Homes Park, 1371 Detroit Ave., from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be speakers and a ribbon cutting to recognize the new stop signs the city has already installed on Detroit Avenue.
