Is There Enough Affordable Housing in Concord?

The city has approved 342 affordable housing units since 2007.

Back in 2007, the Association of Bay Area Governments calculated how much affordable housing each city would have to create by 2014 if new homes for poor people were distributed evenly across the region.

Concord's portion worked out to slightly more than 3,000 units. Since 2007, the city has approved 342 such units. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, a total of 10 housing units of any sort were approved. In addition to the Great Recession, which quashed demand for new developments, city officials note that $8 million in redevelopment money has disappeared along with 8 to 10 percent cuts in affordable housing dollars provided by the feds.

As the Concord City Council reviews progress on the 2007-14 affordable housing goal at its meeting on Tuesday, the Association of Bay Area Governments is already at work finalizing allocations for 2014-2022. Concord's estimated fair share: 3,462.
