Higher Water Rates On Tap At Contra Costa Water District Board Meeting Wednesday

The board will hold a public hearing and may vote on a proposed 3.5 percent rate hike.

The Contra Costa Water District board of directors may vote Wednesday evening on a plan to raise water rates by 3.5 percent.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the district's board room, 1331 Concord Ave. in Concord.

The board will hold a public hearing on the rate increase proposal and then consider whether to approve the hike.

The rate increase is part of an annual review process the district does.

District officials say operating costs are expected to increase by 6 percent this year. They say they offset part of that increase with cost savings. The rate increase is scheduled to pay for the rest.

If the hike is approved, a single-family residence that uses 350 gallons of water a day would pay an extra $2.27 per month.

Where is the 6.0 percent increase coming from? 6 % year over year is a big number…Is there some sort of divine assignation that costs must increase by 6.0%…I wish that the same held true for social security or my savings account…it’s maddening when the proposed increases is based on a number which is not publically supported by facts. So we need to know what is causing operating costs to increase before we can intelligently respond…Until that happens…WHATEVER THEY SAY, I’M AGAINST IT!

Whoa...something's off.
An additional $2.27 for 350 gallons per month. Without any outdoor watering, 1.6 gallon-per-flush toilets, and 2 minute showers, my family of four uses 350 gallons A DAY. Should we be expecting an increase of $68 ($2.27 x 30 days). Ignoring any errors in mathematical units, truth is that the bill is coming do for a lot of the district expansion (think Vaqueros) that was intended to serve the new N.Concord and Port Chicago developments (see master plan). Unfortunately, the ratemaking fundamental of "growth pays for growth" seems to be getting ignored here.

Great Days... whoa, you are correct... 350 gallons a month would be quite a Spartan lifestyle... it's 350 gallons a day... story has been corrected. Thanks for pointing this out.

Thank God we have a well. This is just wrong. Water goers sky high and beer stays the same. We want peopel to eat better? growing your own food is now much harder for a lot of people. ( save your rain water ) Gardening is also good excersize... But, we raise necessities like water when we do not touch things like beer and hard alcohol for much needed monies? why? Sin tax is looking more and more like the way to go to get all this money we so desprerately need. Quit taxing peoles homes and water, start taxing Cigerettes and junk food, things that make us sicker and strain our health care system and so on. Geeze.

EBMUD increased 12% over the next two years on 5-10-11 due to rising gasoline prices et al. Here is the link: http://walnutcreek.patch.com/articles/12-percent-ebmud-rate-hike-recommended
This is all we need right now.
