Former Clayton Councilman Joe Medrano Sentenced For Embezzling
Joe Medrano was sentenced to 18 months in jail Friday after being convicted in October of embezzling funds.

A former vice mayor of Clayton and insurance broker was sentenced to 18 months in jail and 18 months supervised probation Friday for embezzling from a client, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Joe Medrano was convicted in October of embezzling nearly $160,000 in insurance premiums from one of his clients, Redwood Shores-based firm Ipass.

Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of four years, but the judge sentenced him to three years, 18 months of which will be served in supervised probation, Wagstaffe said.
Medrano was vice mayor of Clayton at the time of his conviction and running for re-election, but he resigned his seat following his conviction.

Prosecutors have asked that Medrano be ordered to pay restitution, but the amount has not yet been set.
A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 1, Wagstaffe said.
