Council Asks for Analysis of Community Pool Senior Discount

Lap swimmer says last year's fee increases are upsetting seniors.

The city is going to take a look at revenues and attendance at the Concord Community Pool in light of last year’s reductions in senior citizen discounts.

In the course of a Tuesday night council workshop to review , resident Connie Fray said that fees for seniors nearly doubled. She said she swims laps less often because of the rate increase.

“It’s a health issue for me,” Fray said, adding that a number of lap-swimming colleagues are upset about the cost.

Fray said she has heard that the economy moves have not saved the city much money. “If it’s not working and people are swimming less, it doesn’t make sense to do that,” she said.

Councilman Bill Shinn said he had been contacted by several citizens with the same concern. He and Vice Mayor Ron Leone asked for a staff analysis to be presented at a future meeting.

Joan Carrico, city director of community and recreation, said the report would compare attendance and revenue last year and this year.

Mayor Laura Hoffmeister asked for the analysis to include comparisons of setting discount levels at age 55 or 65.
