Concord To Consider Changing Length Of Mayorship

The term would go from one year to two if the council decides to move forward after a discussion planned for Tuesday.

An upcoming Concord City Council study session on July 23 will focus on the question of whether or not to change the length of the mayor's term from one year to two.

Concord's mayors have been appointed to one-year terms since 1993, according to a staff report.

Currently, the Concord City Council reorganizes annually, choosing from amongst its members who should serve as Mayor and Vice Mayor for the coming year.

Of the 19 Contra Costa cities, 13 appoint a Mayor on an annual rotational basis. No Contra Costa cities with appointed Mayors have terms that exceed one year, according to the report. Five communities, Antioch, Brentwood, Hercules, Martinez, and Richmond directly elect their Mayor for a four-year term, and one community, San Ramon, directly elects their Mayor for a two-year term.

The city council will hold a discussion on the matter and take public comments for consideration during the study session on July 23, which starts at 5:30 p.m. in the permit center conference room at the Concord Civic Center, 1950 Parkside Drive.
