UPDATE: Seven Selected for Measure Q Oversight

One of the committee members will be former Mayor Guy Bjerke.

The Concord City Council selected the seven-member Measure Q Oversight Committee Tuesday night, and it will include former Mayor Guy Bjerke, who is credited with shepherding the sales tax measure to victory last November.

While Bjerke is undoubtedly a supporter of Measure Q, Vice Mayor Ron Leone said the committee make-up represented a "diverse group" of residents and business owners who both supported and opposed the measure.

The committee representing Concord residents are Bjerke, Norman Freitas, Bill Gram-Reefer and Rosanne Nieto.

The business representatives are Richard Eber, Beri Kasper and Dr. Harmesh Kumar.

The terms for Bjerke, Gram-Reefer and Kumar end in 2012. The others expire in 2014.

Voters in November approved Measure Q, and the new sales tax went into effect April 1, rising from 9.25 percent to 9.75 percent. The oversight committee will advise the city on how to direct the revenues from the sales tax increase.
