Charter Update: Mayor Shuey Disappointed MDUSD Isn't More Responsive

Shuey says charter supporters are pushing to get a final decision from the school board by Oct. 25.

Last week, Clayton Mayor David Shuey asked the Mt. Diablo Unified School District board to put the Clayton Valley Charter High School situation on the agenda.

The MDUSD declined to put it on the agenda; the mayor wasn't thrilled.

In an email to district and media members, Shuey wrote:

"What is necessary for two sides to work together in good faith in both actions and words, and what we have from your side is words that, unfortunately, don't come with guarantees of good faith.

"Alas, it seems like we are continually forced to meet and decide how to respond to actions on your part that appear geared not toward a mutual resolution, but a continued delaying tactic. While this may not be true, and you may not see it this way, if you put yourself in our shoes you can see how it would appear given the history."

Shuey said charter supporters will speak at the public comment portion of tonight's meeting and will lay out how they will meet the district's conditions at its Oct. 12 meeting. They want a final decision by the school board at its Oct. 25 meeting.

Shuey also told the board, "I once again implore each of you to understand that this charter is almost unanimously desired by the community, that the charter petition is solid and based on tried, tested and true successful charters in the state, and that we desire to work with you as the approving agency to help each other reach greater academic heights."
