UPDATE: Police Make Arrest in Willie McCovey Memorabilia Case

Walnut Creek police Wednesday evening made an arrest in the Willie McCovey memorabilia case.

Responding to tips from several people with information about the identity of the suspect, police arrested Aaron Taylor Goode, 33, a transient, according to a press release by Lt. Mark Covington. Police made the arrest "without incident" at the Motel 6 on North Main Street, Walnut Creek, at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday.

"Many of the stolen items were recovered," Covington said. "Investigators are working on locating the rest of the stolen items."

On Wednesday morning, police in Concord recovered the Hyundai Sonata stolen two days before from a McDonald's parking lot in Walnut Creek and found some of the baseball memorabilia that was inside the car.

The memorabilia includes bats and balls and an autographed uniform patch, all marked with the name of Willie McCovey, the San Francisco Giants hall of famer.

Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, a citizen called police asking about the stolen Hyundai, learning of the theft through a police news release and/or television news report, said Walnut Creek Police Lt. Bryan Hill. The citizen gave the license plate number and it matched that of the stolen car.

Concord police recovered the car on La Corte Bonita, Concord, near Clayton Road.

Walnut Creek police were processing the car for evidence Wednesday afternoon. Besides the baseball items, there was an expensive commercial kitchen mixer in the trunk, police said.

On Monday, the owner of the car had parked his car at the McDonald's parking lot on North California Boulevard. He went inside for a cup of coffee, emerging to see his car being driven out of the lot and eastbound on Cypress Street. The driver had inadvertently left the keys in the ignition, police said.
