Three in Custody After Overnight Shooting, Vehicle Pursuit in Concord

Police fired at fleeing suspect after he displayed a handgun; recovered packaged marijuana and resolved vehicle pursuit.

Three people are in county jail this morning following an overnight officer involved shooting and vehicle pursuit in Concord.

Concord police say officers were dispatched to a party on the 3100 block of Claudia Drive at approximately 1 a.m. in response to a call about a verbal disturbance between subjects in attendance.

"It was also reported that one of the subjects involved in the disturbance was armed with a handgun and had threatened several people at the party," according to a press release.

Police say when officers arrived the armed suspect and several others left the area in an SUV, which officers then attempted to pull over unsuccessfully at North Sixth Street and Port Chicago Highway. 

When a passenger fled the vehicle, an officer pursued on foot while others pursued the vehicle, said Lt. Steve Dyer.

"During the foot pursuit the suspect displayed a handgun and the pursuing officer fired several shots at the suspect in self defense," reported Dyer.

After the officer opened fire, the suspect threw his gun on the ground and surrendered, he added in the news release.

No pedestrians were on the trail and he suspect was not struck by gunfire or injured, said Dyer.

During the subsequent vehicle pursuit a back pack was thrown from the vehicle and recovered by officers. The vehicle pursuit entered northbound Highway 242 and onto eastbound Highway 4. The SUV yielded to officers on eastbound Highway 4 at Willow Pass Road in Concord and the two occupants were taken into custody.

The driver of the SUV, 19 year old Concord resident Daniel Christopher Griego, was arrested for felony evading arrest, driver permitting a firearm in vehicle, possession of marijuana for sale, and for parole violation.

The passenger inside the SUV, 19 year old Concord resident Kevin Benjamin Torres, was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale, resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer and violating the terms of his court ordered probation.

The arrestee involved in the foot pursuit, 19 year old Concord resident Alonzo Raymond Hernandez, was arrested for resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a loaded and concealed firearm, and for participating in a criminal street gang.

The arrestees were booked at the Concord City Jail on the listed charges and transported to the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Department Main Detention Facility in Martinez.     
     
No further information is being released at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation.
