Retired K-9 'Rosco' Dies

The Concord Police Association says that one of its retired K-9s, Rosco, has passed away.

Rosco was euthanized on Sunday, May 12, after K-9 Officer Matt Switzer "was forced to make the very difficult decision" to have the 13-year-old dog laid to rest. Switzer currently works with a German Shepherd K-9 called "Figo."

According to the Concord Police Association, Rosco began his work with the department in March of 2003 as Switzer’s partner until the spring of 2010 when he had to be retired due to recurring seizures.

"When Rosco was retired he lived the remainder of his life as a beloved member of Officer Switzer’s family," said the Concord Police Association in a statement. "Officer Switzer and K9 Rosco proved to be a great team over the years and an excellent asset to our department."

The Concord Police Association said the following about Rosco:

His fetish for stuffed animals aside, Rosco excelled in drug detection and was very good in protection/apprehension work. During his 9 years on the streets Rosco was responsible for arresting numerous suspects and seizing large quantities of drugs and drug associated currency. When Rosco first came to CPD we gave him to a brand new handler. One of our more experienced handlers commented, “This is like giving a Ferrari to a 16 year old!”

We thank K9 Rosco for the service he provided to our agency and the citizens of our community. He will be missed but never forgotten.
