A jail inmate from Danville who escaped from Marsh Creek Detention Facility earlier Monday was located and retaken into custody in Clayton around 10 a.m. Monday, the sheriff's office reported.

Kohlton Kumnick, 21, walked away from the minimum-security facility in Clayton early Monday morning, sheriff's officials said. His absence was discovered during a 3:30 a.m. inmate count.

Nearby residents were notified of the escape through an emergency phone alert system, and word was spread among local law enforcement agencies, according to the sheriff's office.

At about 10 a.m., a Clayton resident spotted Kumnick near Rialto Drive, near Clayton Community Park — about three miles from the jail — and called authorities, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said. Deputies responded, and Kumnick was located and taken into custody after a brief search.
