Four Women Arrested After Shoplifting, Shooting at Sunvalley Mall

Gun was brandished and fired after struggle with security guards, according to Concord Police.

- Bay City News

Four women were arrested in Concord and Pleasant Hill Thursday evening after one allegedly shot at JC Penney security guards who tried to detain the women for shoplifting.

Concord police responded around 5:45 p.m. Thursday to a call of a shoplifting and shooting in the JC Penney parking lot at Sunvalley Mall.

Store security had detained four women there for shoplifting.

The women resisted and physically assaulted two of the security guards. During the struggle, one suspect pulled out a gun, firing at and missing the guards, police said.

Two of the women ran out of the parking lot, while the other two sped away in a car.

An officer spotted the suspects' car about 10 minutes later on state Highway 4 and stopped the vehicle near Port Chicago Highway.

The officer stopped and arrested the two women without incident and the other two suspects were arrested near Contra Costa Boulevard and Concord Avenue in Pleasant Hill, police said.

The women were arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, battery, brandishing a firearm, possession of a loaded and concealed firearm, possession of stolen property and threatening a witness to a crime.

I wonder if the Sunvalley Mall is a "gun free zone" where honest citizens with a concealed weapons permit are not allowed to carry a gun while thieves will do so?

Chuck, I'm not caught up in all aspects of the new 2012 gun laws, so can't directly answer your question. But in this case, thankfully, nobody was injured and the alleged thieves were arrested by CPD and PHPD -- Wouldn't it have been more likely that a shootout between an "honest citizen" and the "thieves" potentially hurt more people and have escalated this situation to something a lot worse than what did end up taking place?
