Former Politico Comments on Controversial Commutation Case
Fabian Nunez cites the suffering of the Santos family of Concord.
A former political heavyweight made his first public comments on the commutation of his son’s conviction for voluntary manslaughter in the 2008 death of Luis Santos, a San Diego State student from Concord.
Fabian Nunez’s comments appeared in a Wednesday story in The Sacramento Bee.
“At no point can we begin to measure the level of suffering the (Santos) family has gone through,” Nunez told The Bee. “It’s hard not to blame yourself as a parent. It’s hard not to carry the weight of your children’s mistakes on your shoulders.”

Nunez is the former speaker of the state Assembly. His son is Esteban Nunez.
The case has touched a nerve because former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, on his last day in office, reduced Esteban Nunez’s sentence from 16 to seven years. That has prompted a couple of civil lawsuits and a comment from Kathy Santos of Concord, mother of the deceased: “Political swindlers hijacked our justice.”
