Fatal Shooting Victim Apparently Shot Himself

A man found shot to death in his Antioch apartment on New Year's
Eve appears to have accidentally shot himself, a police sergeant said today.
Antioch police Sgt. Tony Morefield said police are investigating
the death of 30-year-old Melvin Bryant Jr. as an accidental, self-inflicted
shooting and that there appears to be no sign of foul play or suicide.
Police said officers responded around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday to several
reports of a shooting at an apartment complex in the 2100 block of L Street,
where they found Bryant suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said investigators interviewed witnesses at the scene and
recovered a handgun.
On the same night, a 26-year-old man in East Palo Alto was also
found to have accidentally shot himself in the head, according to police.
He survived his injuries and was taken to a hospital. An update on
that man's condition was not immediately available this afternoon.
