A 32-year-old Antioch man was driving his 1999 Honda Accord on the highway when he made an unsafe lane change, crashing into a 2004 Mazda 6 driven by a 29-year-old Napa resident, according to the CHP.

A 23-year-old woman also from Napa was a passenger in the Mazda.

The collision caused the Mazda driver to lose control and travel off the roadway where the car collided into a light pole, according to the CHP.

The Mazda continued down a dirt embankment where it came to a rest in a dirt field south of the highway and west of Solano Way.

The 23-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic, while the driver in the Mazda was taken to a hospital for broken ribs and vertebrae and internal bleeding, according to the CHP.

The Antioch man, the only person in his car, stopped his Honda in the center median and was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and manslaughter, the CHP said.

The suspected drunken driver complained of pain to his wrist following the collision.

The Honda had earlier been reported to CHP dispatch as a possible drunken driver.
