Concord Police Shoot Dog During Hunt for Prowler

The pet owner says the dog barked as Concord police entered his yard and was shot.

Kirby, a 13-year-old cocker spaniel, is recovering from a bullet wound inflicted by Concord police last week, and the pet owner says he wants an apology.

The dog was shot during a police search for a suspect on June 17, reports the Bay Area News Group. Police were looking for a suspect and entered the side yard of Zach Grimm and his roommate Dave Biller.

Kirby started barking and ran up to the Concord police officer twice before the dog was shot, according to KGO News. Police say the officer did not use his pepper spray because he had a gun in one hand and believed there was a burglar in the backyard.

The dog is recovering but still has a portion of the bullet near his spine.

Grimm says he is angry at the police and would like an explanation and apology.
