Clayton Police Following Leads in Sunday's Attack

Some of the initial information released on the attack has proven to be incorrect, the department says.

Clayton Police say tips from the community have led to promising leads in the after Oktoberfest on Sunday night.

"Because we advised the electronic media, (Clayton Patch) and Claycord, we've received three calls that have given us information about the possible attackers," Chief Dan Lawrence said.

Lawrence said some of the details the Clayton Police Department originally released to the media Wednesday have proven to be incorrect upon further investigation.

Police originally said the victim, who was punched and kicked repeatedly, was a carnival worker at last weekend's Oktoberfest. It is now believed the victim wasn't a carnival employee, but her ex-boyfriend was a recent employee, who was recently fired over a drug issue.

Lawrence added that the victim has been changing her story and has at times been uncooperative with officers. She initially refused medical assistance before accepting it. The victim says she did not know her attackers, Lawrence said.

The attack happened Sunday night around 9 p.m. when eight to 10 young men punched and kicked the victim at Oak and Main Streets near the entrance to the pedestrian tunnel that leads to the library, police say.

A carnival worker walked up during the attack, helping the woman up as the attackers ran toward Diablo Street.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Officer Enea with the Clayton Police Department at 925-673-7350.
