Clayton Man Arrested in Serial Pharmacy Burglaries

Clayton's Taylor Hughes is the primary suspect in pharmacy burglaries in Clayton, Concord, Orinda and Pleasant Hill.

BAY CITY NEWS — A 19-year-old Clayton man who Concord police believe stole prescription medications from pharmacies in several East Bay cities was arrested Thursday, and a second suspect is being sought, police said.

Last month, Concord police responded to a Rite Aid at 1905 Monument Blvd. where two men reportedly stole prescription medication from the pharmacy area, but the suspects had fled the store before officers arrived, police said.

The subsequent investigation revealed that one suspect distracted the pharmacy attendant while the other jumped over the sales counter and grabbed several bottles of prescription medications, police said.

Similar thefts committed in Clayton, Pleasant Hill and Orinda led Concord police to work with those other police departments on the investigation, and on Thursday, detectives identified Taylor Hughes as the primary suspect in the thefts, police said.

An arrest warrant was issued for Hughes, who Clayton police officers took into custody during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Search warrants served simultaneously at residences in Clayton and Concord revealed evidence that the department says links Hughes to the thefts.

Hughes was booked at the Concord Police Department Jail on multiple counts of burglary before he was transferred to the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, police said.

The second, unidentified suspect is described as a black man between 20 and 22 years old. He stands 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds, has short black hair and was last seen wearing a long-sleeved dark shirt and dark pants, police said.
