A 70-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle while bicycling in Antioch on Wednesday evening, police said. At about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, Antioch police received a report that a bicyclist had been struck at the intersection of West 18th Street and Auto Center Drive.
Upon arrival, police and emergency medical personnel found the bicyclist, an Antioch resident, lying on the ground suffering from head and leg wounds, police said. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries at about 10:30 a.m. today, police said. Police said witnesses reported that the bicyclist was riding north on Auto Center Drive and was crossing the intersection of West 18th Street against a red light when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Witnesses told investigators that the driver, identified by police as a 21-year-old Antioch man, was traveling west on West 18th Street through a green light when he struck the bicyclist, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation. The name of the bicyclist is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. Police have not confirmed whether he was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
