An Antioch man has been charged with second-degree robbery in connection with a bank heist that occurred in Gilroy on New Year's Eve, a Santa Clara County Superior Court clerk said today. Daniel Allen Hodges, 38, was arraigned Tuesday on the single count of robbery and is set to appear at a plea hearing at the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse on Jan. 24, according to the clerk.
Hodges was arrested in San Leandro last Thursday on suspicion of robbing the Union Bank at 8000 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy on Dec. 31, Gilroy police said. Police said that at about 3:50 p.m. that day, Hodges entered the bank and handed a teller a note demanding money, without showing a weapon, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Information provided by anonymous tipsters led police to identify Hodges as a suspect, and on Jan. 7, officers showed a photo lineup to bank employees who were present during the robbery, police said.
The employees pointed out Hodges as the suspect and, based on that information, police in San Leandro in Alameda County arrested Hodges on Thursday and held him for extradition to Santa Clara County, police said. Gilroy police then had Hodges booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail, police said. Other law enforcement agencies are investigating whether Hodges may have committed additional robberies in Alameda County, Gilroy police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza said. The investigation into the Gilroy robbery is ongoing, and Gilroy police are urging anyone with information about the case to call the department at (408) 846-0350, or leave an anonymous tip at (800) 782-7463.
