Alcohol Suspected in Man's Solo-Car Crash on Hwy 4 Saturday Night

A 22-year-old Pittsburg man who was badly injured in a solo-car wreck on state Highway 4 in Concord over the weekend was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol, a California Highway Patrol officer said today.

The man was driving east on Highway 4 near the Solano Way exit at high speeds at 11:59 p.m. Saturday when the car went off of the roadway and rolled down an embankment, through a chain-link fence and into a telephone pole, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

Fransen said the man suffered major injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle and landed in lanes of traffic on Arnold Industrial Place east of Peralta Road.

He was taken to John Muir Medical Center to be treated and an update on his condition was not immediately available this afternoon.

Investigators believe the man was driving under the influence at the time of the crash, according to Fransen.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about what led up to it is asked to call the CHP's Contra Costa area office at (925) 646-4980.
