The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a fire in a one story single family home on Valley Drive in Pittsburg at approximately 6:59 pm this evening.  The initial call to the fire district dispatch center was received by an alarm monitoring center based on a fire alarm activation in the residence.  Within a minute of receiving the notification of the fire alarm activation, multiple calls from neighbors were received by the dispatch center stating the house was on fire.  A large column of smoke was visible to responding units from over a mile away.  The first fire engine arrived within 5 minutes of being dispatched and found the home to be completely involved in fire with an adjacent exposure residence also becoming involved.  A 2nd alarm was called and fire crews initiated a defensive fire attack on the first residence with large hose lines from the exterior due to the heavy fire involvement and made an interior offensive attack on the second residence to minimize fire spread and damage to that home.  The occupants of the primary involved residence were reported to be out of the home and a search of the second residence was all clear.

A total of 31 personnel responded to the fire, including 4 chief officers, 6 engines, 2 ladder trucks, and one breathing support unit.  Fire crews were able to bring the fires under control within 30 minutes of their arrival.  The primary residence was a total loss with damage estimated at $250,000 while the second residence suffered minor damage from the fire with damage estimated at less than $10,000.

The occupants of the primary residence were alerted to the fire by their smoke detector and found a fire in the garage.  After attempts to put the fire out failed, they exited the building. The three occupants of the primary residence were taken to an area hospital by AMR ambulance for smoke inhalation.

A Fire District fire investigator was called to the scene.  The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is believed to be accidental.
