Concord, Clayton Death Notices

A list of some of the people with ties to Concord and Clayton who passed away recently

Frances Dee Coats: A resident of Concord for more than 50 years, Coats was a 1948 graduate of Mt. Diablo High School. She spent her entire career at Dow Chemical Company in Pittsburg, retiring in 1985. Coats died after a brief illness on June 27 at the age of 82.

Dorothy Frankel: A long-time resident of Concord, Frankel and her late husband, Melvin, owned Miss Smarty Pants clothing shops as well as a Leather Factory Outlet store. She also volunteered at the Concord Convention and Visitors Bureau. Frankel died on July 2 at the age of 89.

Walter J. Jones: A resident of Concord, Jones was a mechanic by trade who enjoyed working on cars. He also enjoyed horses, astronomy and Stinson Beach. Jones died on June 21 at the age of 75.

Arnold J. "Arnie" Joosen: A resident of Concord, Joosen worked for 42 years in the insurance industry. He was founder and president of the Concord Moose Lodge men's golf club. Joosen died June 29 at the age of 73.

John Magana: A resident of Concord, Magana owned Johnny's Barber Shop on Clayton Road before retiring in 1983. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of B.P.O.E 1994 for 50 years. He died July 2 at the age of 90.

Richard Joe "Cavo" Martinez: A resident of Concord, Martinez was a bartender for the past five years at the Marriott in Walnut Creek. He was also a drummer in a number of Bay Area bands as well as a member of the Concord Moose Lodge. Martinez died on July 1 at the age of 53.

James Cotham: A resident of Antioch, Cotham was a World War II veteran. He also worked as a civilian for 25 years at the Port Chicago Naval Weapons Station. Cotham was a deacon at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Concord. He died on the Fourth of July at the age of 89.

Irene Jacqueline "Jackie" DeGroodt: A resident of Martinez, DeGroodt was a teacher for 21 years at Bel Air Elementary School in Bay Point. She was also active in the Concord United Methodist Church. DeGroodt died on June 26 at the age of 82.
