Local Olympians Honored at Board of Supervisors Meeting

Olympians from Clayton and Concord received county recognition today.

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is honoring a number of local Olympians at its meeting in Martinez today.

Three-time gold medalist swimmer Dana Vollmer, of Richmond, will be recognized, along with fellow swimmer Natalie Coughlin, of Lafayette.

Vollmer won gold in the 100-meter butterfly -- setting a world record time of 55.98 seconds -- as well as the 4-by-100-meter medley relay and the 4-by-200-meter freestyle relay.

Coughlin won bronze in the 4-by-100-meter freestyle relay.

The board will also honor sisters Jessica and Maggie Steffens, of Danville, Melissa Seidemann, of Walnut Creek, and Heather Petri, of Orinda -- all members of the gold medal-winning women's water polo team.

Others recognized this morning will be bronze medal-winning synchronized springboard diver Kristian Ipsen, of Clayton; bronze medalist in the women's quadruple sculls Kara Kohler, of Clayton; synchronized swimmer Mariya Koroleva of Concord; men's rower Anthony Fahden, of Lafayette; and men's water polo team member Peter Varellas.

The board meeting began at 9:30 a.m. at 651 Pine St. in Martinez.
