Do You Think Interstate 680 Is Too Dangerous?

There seems to be a wave of accidents happening on Interstate 680, with two more happening this morning. Do you think the freeway has become too dangerous? Share your thoughts in the comments.

If you were headed north on Interstate 680 this morning from the Walnut Creek area, it probably wasn't a pleasant experience.

An ice cream truck overturned just north of Rudgear Road at about 7:15 a.m., blocking three lanes of traffic.

About an hour later, there was another accident near the Crow Canyon exit in San Ramon.

It's not just today. Recently there have been a number of accidents on Interstate 680.

In August, a fatal accident on an I-680 on-ramp in Pleasanton claimed the life of a 22-year-old.

About a week earlier, two people died from a fatal accident in San Ramon.

Then, in early September, a CHP officer was shot while attempting a traffic stop in Alamo.

And on Tuesday, a man jumped to his death from the Treat Boulevard overpass onto the freeway.

Do you think Interstate 680 is too dangerous? Do you feel safe driving on it? Is this just a bad stretch and the freeway isn't more dangerous than any other? Tell us what you think in the comments section.

The problems are greatest when school is in session. Trucks should be banned from 680 between 7 and 8 A.M. weekdays.

What does a man jumping onto a freeway and a CHP officer making a traffic stop have to do with I-680 being dangerous as a roadway? What makes I-680 dangerous is drivers who speed and who don't pay attention.

People speeding when the traffic is slowing up ahead, and then changing lanes mindlessly, is the main problem. If we can get through the Walnut Creek Interchange at 55mph tha'ts Nirvana folks, we don't need to go 70mph there. It's not the place to make up time. Neither is the Caldecott Tunnel, while we're on the subject.

I think most of the highways in the Bay Area are too dangerous. Too many cars, not enough highways, bridges or tunnels and inadequate alternatives to driving.
