First Friday Films: Spirited Away, 2002 animated

Spirited Away is a 2002 animated Japanese film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and also directed by Kirk Wise. Meet Chihiro, a sulky ten-year-old girl traveling with her parents to a new neighborhood; they become lost in the spirit world, then separated. She takes a job in Yubaba's bathhouse while trying to figure out how to free herself and her parents so they can return to the human world. Creatures of all types inhabit the bathhouse, and there is shape shifting galore.

The Brussats of Spirituality & Practice say, "... refreshing and unusual for animated features is Miyazaki's refusal to set up a dualistic battle between the little girl and the evil adversary. All the central characters have both a light and a dark side. Our heroine must overcome the forces of fear, entitlement, selfishness, gluttony and greed within herself as part of the blooming of her soul. Little Chihiro does what spiritual seekers will recognize as "shadow work" - taking back her projections, learning to love all parts of herself, including those mirrored by others - healing both herself and those around her in the process."

Roger Ebert gave it 4 out of 4 stars saying, "Spirited Away is surely one of the finest of all animated films and has as its foundation the traditional bedrock of animation, which is frame-by-frame drawing." It received a Japanese Academy Prize, a Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival, an Audience Choice Award at the San Francisco Film Festival and a 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film was dubbed into English by Walt Disney Pictures under the supervision of Pixar's John Lasseter.
