Week in Review: Teachers Agree to Charter, Bicycle Danger and Memorial Day Event

A look back at the top stories on Clayton Patch this week.

The big news in Clayton last week was that a majority of teachers said yes to converting Clayton Valley High to a charter school. As of Friday, more than 40 teachers had signed the petition agreeing to the transition and charter advocates hope to get more signatures this week.

Now the process heads to the Mount Diablo Unified School District, which will be presented with the charter in the next two weeks and will hold a public hearing on the issue within 30 days.

In other news, a California Highway Patrol report says Contra Costa County is the most dangerous county in the Bay Area for bicyclists. From 2005 to 2009, 23 cyclists were killed in the county compared with nine in San Francisco.

Last week, hundreds gathered in downtown Clayton to observe Memorial Day.There were a number of speakers at the event, including Mayor David Shuey and active military members. Mary Tollefson, whose son Benjamin was killed in Iraq, told spectators about her son and how she has continued her life after the tragedy. "Getting stuck in the what if's only keeps you from moving forward," she said.

The weather wasn't ideal last weekend, but food columnist Janet Mueller gave some ideas for what to put on the grill when the rain stops falling.
