Room to Roam

It's still possible to find an affordable home with a big flat lot in Concord or Clayton.

Feeling a little squeezed? Do you sometimes feel like you could water your neighbor's lawn with the sprayer from your kitchen sink if you tried really hard? Or like you should start drawing straws on your cul-de-sac to see who can back out of their driveway first?

It happens; sometimes you simply outgrow what used to fit just fine. Here are a few homes on the market that offer plenty of space to putter around, garden, entertain—even in your bathrobe if that's what you feel like.

14 Nottingham Circle, Clayton

1393 Lichen Court, Concord

$299,000

This four-bedroom, two-bath house has 1,648 square feet and sits on a fifth of an acre lot (.20) that is flat and would be quite the find for someone. This neighborhood, named Artlington by the developer, always has been popular and well kept since it was built in 1963. In California, where land is at a premium in many areas, flat lots add value. People tend to buy homes on big lots and stay put, giving the area more stability. From this neighborhood, which is tucked behind Lucky's on Clayton Road, residents can walk to shopping, banking, restaurants, Clayton Valley High School, and Newhall Park, with its bocce ball courts and dog park.

Located on a nice cul-de-sac, it has a kitchen that opens into the family room, plus a formal living room with a fireplace. There 's also a spacious master with bay window, central air and heat, dual-pane windows and the big yard. The home needs a little TLC., but it's in a very nice area.
