Pearl Harbor Day survivors will once again light up the beacon atop Mount Diablo on Friday afternoon in remembrance of the Japanese attack on that Hawaiian port on Dec. 7, 1941.
The event at the summit building will last from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is organized by Save Mount Diablo and the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors.
The Pearl Harbor survivors will speak first and then the beacon will be lit and shine through the night. It's the only time during the year the beacon is turned on.
Seven Pearl Harbor veterans spoke at last year's ceremony. One recalled how bullets came through the wall of his room while he was shaving on that Sunday morning in 1941.
The beacon is in need of major repairs. Save Mount Diablo has received permission from the governor's office to raise money and provide volunteers to fix the historic light, which was initially lit by aviator Charles Lindbergh in 1928.
