Going Charter (Maybe), City Attorney Calls it Quits and Bridal Boutique Opening

A look at the top stories on Clayton Patch in the last week.

: In the biggest news of the week, parents, teachers, school administration and elected officials have begun discussing the possibility of making Clayton Valley a charter school.

For Clayton Valley to become a charter school, it would need a majority of CVHS teachers to approve the charter and also approval from MDUSD. If the school district doesn't grant approval, their decision can be appealed at the county and state levels, according to Bacigalupo.

If CVHS became a charter, it would be a conversion charter, the type of school created when an existing public school goes charter. CVHS would no longer be part of MDUSD and instead would follow its own guidelines (or "charter").

: When Maury Huguet became Clayton's first city attorney in 1964, he was the youngest in the state and was just starting his career as a lawyer.

Huguet, now 74, told the council Tuesday night that he and his law firm Turner, Huguet & Adams, will step aside from representing the City of Clayton. The firm, the only one to represent the city, will stay on until a replacement is found.

"It's pretty amazing, with all the change happening at this time, to have the same law firm for 47 years," Mayor David Shuey said. "It has allowed us an amazing amount of institutional knowledge over the years, which has been very helpful."

: Sarah Dottery and daughter Desiree Mortenson have opened Blessed Brides in the Clayton Valley Shopping Center.

Dottery worked for 20 years for Chevron before being laid off last September. Not wanting to retire, she decided to open her first business with help from Mortenson.

The duo hope to tap into an ignored market, making it comfortable for average and above average women to try on a wedding dress.

Prices are reasonable, with the highest end gowns going for about $2,800 and the cheapest about $300. Prom dresses are available for less than $100.

: Food critic Janet Mueller reviewed the Wine Thieves weekly wine tasting and she enjoyed it immensely.

She wrote, " If you haven’t tried Clayton Wine Thieves’ Friday Night Tastings (or FNTs, as they’re affectionately called), you’re in for a treat."

"My personal favorite was the pinot grigio — so we bought a bottle for $6.99. This wine was the answer to my silent question, 'What’s a tasty but cheap wine to sip while watching a movie from Netflix?'"

: Meteorologist Gina De Vecchio did her first forecast for Clayton Patch. Watch for her weekly forecasts on Monday and her weekend forecast on Friday's.
