Five Things to do This Week

This week: learn about wine, cook pasta and take a hike.

1. Take a class about wine and chocolate just in time to impress a date for Valentines Day. The Concord Community and Recreation Services presents a course aimed to open your mind to other wine possibilities, including port and sherry, while also incorporating chocolate. The class will be held on Monday, Feb. 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Willow Pass Community Center, 2748 E Olivera Rd. Participants must be 21 years old and bring four wine glasses with them to class. The cost of the course is $25 for Concord residents and $30 for non-residents. An additional $20 materials fee will be charged. Registration is required.

2. Make a special treat for your Valentine this year with a Sweetheart Valentine Pasta class this Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The course, which will be taught at the Centre Concord, 5298 Clayton Rd., will teach participants how to make a red pasta dish using beets. You must be 18 years old, register for the course in advance and have taken a basic pasta class before. The class costs $35 for residents and $40 for non-residents and an $8 materials fee is required. Participants must also bring their own cooking tools to make the pasta from scratch.

3. Children age three to seven are invited to a Valentine-themed event this Thursday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m at, the Clayton Community Library. They will tell holiday-related stories and participants will create Valentine's Day crafts. The library asks people register their children for the event in advance.

4. In a rut? Karen St. Julien has created a pick-me-up workshop entitled “Recess: It’s Not Just For Kids” that will be featured at the this Wednesday, Feb. 9. From 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., learn the importance of having fun and listen to Julien’s presentation, followed by related activities. Registration is required for this free event.

5. Take a hike this Saturday, Feb. 12 from 9 AM to 1:30 PM. The Sierra Club Mount Diablo Group is co-sponsoring a hike from if weather permits. Rain will result in a cancellation of the hike. Participants are advised to bring poles, cameras, sunscreen and lunch and dress in layers. Hikers will meet at the end of Regency Drive.
