New Wheels for Clayton Police

Thanks to a $6,000 grant, the Police Department has three new bikes.

Police officers have been riding some first-class bikes around town the past week.

The Clayton Police Department bought three new Cannondales with a $6,000 grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management Control District.

"We wouldn't have been able to get the bikes with the lean budget we have, so it's great we got the grant," said Police Chief Dan Lawrence.

A presentation by officer Allen White at Diablo View Middle School in March put the department on the road to new wheels.

The weeklong bike safety event was hosted by 511 Contra Costa, which promotes alternatives to single-occupant vehicles. The organizers were so impressed by White that they worked to secure a grant.

The new police bikes come fully equipped: siren, radio pack and dual-purpose tires.

"Our old bikes were 12 to 15 years old," Lawrence said. "So these came right when we needed them."
