What Do You Think of the Two New Subways?

The restaurants moved into Clayton this summer.

Subway has come to Clayton this summer.

First, a Subway opened in the Flora Square building downtown in June. Then, just last week, a Subway reopened in Clayton Station, after closing late last year.

Sam Sandu, an owner of downtown, said he doesn't believe the Subway downtown will be able to stay in business because of the competition already in town, the lack of foot traffic and its large overheard.

Sandu said he doesn't see the new Subway as a threat to his business.

"I believe we can survive because this is my own property and they have to pay a lease," he said. "I don’t care about competition. Competition is good. Let’s see who is the best."

Sandu was critical of the city for allowing the Subway downtown because there are two delis (Johnny's and Canesa's) there already. The city doesn't approve individual businesses. It lets developers decide what businesses they want to occupy their property as long as the business meets the city's downtown plan.
