Should The Concord 99 Cents Store Be Allowed To Sell Alcohol?

The 99 Cents Only store on Clayton Road has applied for a permit to sell beer and wine. Do you think it's a good idea?

Shoppers at the 99 Cents Only store on Clayton Road could soon get more than they bargained for — with a new selection of beer and wine from a buck and up.

The store at 4665 Clayton Rd. has applied for an alcohol permit to sell beer and wine for between 99 cents and $4.99. Currently, the nearest 99 Cents Only store with an alcohol permit is more than 20 miles away in San Leandro.

Although the chain store started in the 80s as a way for owner Dave Gold to liquidate the slow-selling wines from his liquor store, the majority of locations today do not sell beer and wine.

Not all Concordians are happy about a the Concord store becoming a potential source for cheap alcohol.

"I don't really think it's really the greatest idea, especially at a dollar store, because you have some people that are coming in here at night that aren't the greatest," Concord resident Clayton Groves told KGO. "So it might be a little bit of a dangerous situation for some of the employees."
